Dry Method

The dry method is a classical and most-common straightforward technique for applying vinyl decals to various surfaces. In this method, no water or soapy solution is used. The adhesive side of the vinyl decal is placed directly onto the clean and dry target surface, but be warned, there’s very little room for further repositioning once it sticks. Careful alignment is crucial since adjustments are not possible once the decal contacts the surface. A squeegee or similar tool is used to press out air bubbles and ensure immediate adhesion. This method is ideal for smaller and simpler decals, where quick and secure placement is a priority.

Before beginning the dry application process, gather the necessary tools and materials:

Step-by-Step Guide

Thoroughly clean the area with rubbing alcohol or soap and water to remove any dirt, dust, or residue from the application surface. Avoid using Windex or similar products, as they can leave behind a residue that hinders the sticker’s adhesion. Allow the surface to completely dry before applying the sticker.

Each decal will arrive as three layers of material. The top layer is clear transfer tape, which is used to apply the decal. The second layer is the vinyl film, which is the decal itself. The bottom layer is the backing paper.

When you receive your decal in the mail, lay it flat and firmly run a credit card or application squeegee across the top of the transfer tape. This step ensures proper adherence of the transfer tape to the decal, which is especially important if the decal was shipped in a mailing tube.

Peel the white paper backing off the sticker exposing the adhesive side. If the sticker sticks to the backing, gently reattach the paper backing and repeat Step 2.

Align the exposed adhesive side of the decal with the desired location on the surface. Ensure it is correctly positioned before making contact with the surface, as repositioning can be challenging with the dry method. Once the decal is in the desired position, use a squeegee or credit card to apply even and firm pressure across the entire surface of the decal. Start from the center and work your way outward to remove any air bubbles and ensure good adhesion.

Carefully peel the transfer tape from the top of the decal, ensuring a slow and controlled motion. Avoid pulling the tape away from the surface; instead, peel it at a sharp (45-degree) angle while applying gentle pressure on top of the decal as you go. If any part of the decal begins to lift with the tape, use a credit card to press that area back down, and then attempt to peel the tape again.

Even the best applications may develop a few bubbles, but all is not lost. There are some simple steps you can take to address these issues. If the bubbles are small, consider waiting a few days to see if they dissipate on their own. Direct sunlight and temperature changes can make a big difference. You can always puncture them later. For larger or persistent bubbles, use a small pin to puncture them. Start by puncturing the bubble at the edge and then use your thumb to press the graphic onto the surface. Begin on the opposite side and work your way towards the puncture point.

After removing the application tape, go over the entire decal once more with the squeegee to ensure it adheres firmly to the surface. Pay special attention to any intricate details or corners. Allow the decal to set and adhere properly to the surface. Avoid touching or applying any additional pressure for at least 24 hours. This ensures that the adhesive fully bonds with the surface.

Wet Method

The wet method offers a more flexible approach to vinyl decal application. It involves the use of a mixture of water and a small amount of liquid soap, which is applied to the target surface, creating a slippery surface. The adhesive side of the vinyl decal is also moistened with the soapy water solution, allowing for repositioning and reducing the risk of air bubbles. This method is particularly useful for larger and more intricate decals, offering greater flexibility during the placement process. But you can use it freely on decals of any size. Patience is key with the wet method as it may take some time for the decal to fully dry and adhere securely to the surface.

Step-by-Step Guide

Place the graphic face down with the ‘transfer tape’ side down on a clean, flat surface. Slowly peel away the protective backing to expose the adhesive. Be careful not to let the sticky part of the vinyl decal come into contact with anything.

Prepare the solution. Fill a spray bottle with water and add a small amount of mild detergent. It should be a solution of about 5% soap and 95% water. Shake the bottle gently to mix the solution. Generously spray both the adhesive side of the graphic and the surface with an application fluid. Ensure that the entire area is thoroughly sprayed. Throughout the process, be ready to remoisten any areas that begin to dry before you have a chance to work with the material.

Place the adhesive side of the decal on the prepeared surface. While it’s still wet, take your time to measure and adjust the vinyl decal to achieve the desired positioning. Once it’s in place, use a squeegee or credit card with firm strokes, starting from the center and moving outwards, to push out the application fluid and ensure secure placement. Repeat this process until you’ve removed most of the application fluid trapped between the decal and the surface. Make sure there are no remaining fluid or air bubbles.

Wait 15-30 minutes for the adhesive to bond to the surface. If the decal easily pulls away from the surface during this step, wait a little longer and try again.

After the decal has dried, carefully peel off the application tape from both the decal and the surface. If any peeling occurs during this process, re-apply the decal using a squeegee (as in Step 3) and wait for about 30 minutes before attempting to remove the transfer tape again. After removing the application tape, go over the entire decal once more with the squeegee to ensure it adheres firmly to the surface. Pay special attention to any intricate details or corners.
